Discover the Historic Gustaf Adolf Church in Östermalm, Stockholm

Beautifully situated in the middle of Gustaf Adolf Park in Östermalm, Gustaf Adolf Church is a landmark rich in history and architectural splendor.

Named after King Gustav II Adolf, this remarkable church was inaugurated on the anniversary of his death in 1892, with notable attendance from Oscar II, Crown Prince Gustaf, Prince Carl, and Prince Eugen.

Initially owned by the officer corps of the Svea and Göta Life Guards, the church was later purchased in 1964 by the Oscars parish. This transformed it into the vibrant parish church it is today.

Architectural Details of Gustaf Adolf Church

Carl Möller originally designed Gustaf Adolf Church as a garrison church for the nearby Svea Life Guards between 1890 and 1892. The regiment’s own personnel carried out significant portions of the masonry and woodwork, adding to its unique character.

Architect Möller’s design features a Neo-Gothic style, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale. The building plan orients east-west and incorporates an asymmetric design influenced by Anglo-Saxon architecture. Notably, the church includes a lower side nave to the north and a distinctive square tower in the northwest that houses the main entrance.

The sacristy is located in the northwest, while the vestibule protrudes to the southwest, adding to the building’s architectural uniqueness.
