History of Kungsholm Church
The foundation of Kungsholm Church was laid on May 10, 1673, with generous contributions from King Karl XI. However, economic complications and conflicts interrupted the construction in 1676.
Nearly a decade later, in 1685, construction resumed, leading to the church’s inauguration on Sunday, December 2, 1688. The grand ceremony was led by Archbishop Olof Svebilius in the presence of King Karl XI, Ulrika Eleonora, and Dowager Queen Hedvig Eleonora.
Despite the solemn inauguration, the church’s interior was only partially completed, with the vaulted ceilings still missing. Economic constraints delayed their completion until 1757. The restoration in 1882 resulted in the loss of the church’s original 23 Carolinian windows. However, during the reconstruction from 1954–56, efforts retrieved and reconstructed them, and now 20 of these windows bathe the church interior in golden-yellow light.
